Harley Rothstein : Music + Words

Harley Rothstein

Harley Rothstein is a Canadian educator, writer, and musician.  He has a PhD in the History of Education and has conducted extensive research in the development of alternative schools in Canada.  Having taught music at Vancouver elementary schools for over a decade, Harley also taught music education and supervised student teachers at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Education.

As a musician, he has performed extensively in various genres including folk, rock, and Jewish liturgical music. He recently recorded and released two albums of folk music and another of Jewish sacred music.

Harley has recorded and produced three CDs: Songs of Love and Humanity:  Folk Songs of Fifty Years Volumes 1 & 2; and Modim: Songs of Spirit and Gratitude.  


Words

As both an educator and a writer, Harley has written extensively on education, with a focus on alternative schools in BC and across Canada. In February, 2024 Harley published his major work, Alternative Schools in British Columbia 1960-1975: A Social and Cultural History using documents he uncovered along with his own conducted interviews with 350 subjects.
